How it works
Membership in VOICE is non-auditioned and we welcome anyone over the age of 13. You don’t even need to be able to read music - many of our members don’t! Our only membership requirement is proof of COVID-19 vaccination. Concert seasons follow the calendar year and are divided into seasons: February to June and August to December.
We hold our summer concert series in mid-June, and our winter concert series in mid-December. Each concert series takes place over a single weekend, with the first performance Saturday evening and the second performance Sunday afternoon. We take a break following the December concert through late January, and following the June concert through late July.
From choral music to popular current hits, Broadway tunes to holiday favorites, our concerts reflect a wide range of musical styles and are memorized and moderately choreographed. Our members’ musical experience ranges from novice to seasoned singers, and music is performed in coed harmonies, ranging from three to eight parts. Concerts are performed with a minimum three-piece combo band that includes keys, guitar/bass, and drums.
Choreography
Choreography plays a dynamic role in our concerts, with about half of the songs featuring light to moderate movement. These movements are often tailored to specific voice parts or stage locations, adding a visual layer to the music. We typically begin incorporating choreography about halfway through the season and welcome members to volunteer in developing and teaching movements for individual songs. Our members bring a wide range of experience, from novice dancers to music performance majors and even former dancers. No matter your background, you'll find a comfortable place in the process and be able to contribute to the group's creative energy.
Membership expectations
Rehearsals for singers are every Sunday evening from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m. during the concert season. We do not rehearse on the weekends of Memorial Day and Labor Day. Regular attendance at rehearsals is expected of all singers, but we know that life can get in the way. Members are expected to miss no more than 25% of rehearsals (typically five rehearsals) in order to participate in concerts.
Tech Week is typically held Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday evenings leading up to concert weekend, and is when we rehearse in the performance space and integrate all the technical elements (lights, sound, etc.) to perfect the weekend’s show. Like rehearsals, attendance throughout Tech Week is essential.
In addition to attending rehearsals and Tech Week, members are expected to:
Participate in one fundraising activity during the season. Our non-profit organization relies heavily on fundraising and sponsorships to meet our operating costs, so we need everyone to pitch in! Activities from previous seasons include reaching out to individuals and businesses during our annual sponsorship drive, working a Cabaret fundraiser, or hosting a unique fundraiser of your own design.
Attend one outreach activity during the season; for example, national anthem performance, service day with the season’s beneficiary, help with a VOICE fundraiser, or staff a VOICE booth during community events.
Serve on a committee. We have three committees that help to support the work of our Leadership Team: Artistic, Fundraising/Outreach, and Marketing. Committees typically meet once or twice a season. You can also choose to participate in three outreach activities in lieu of serving on a committee. This expectation is waived for first-time members.
Membership costs
We do our best to keep membership expenses low, and never want cost to be a factor in joining VOICE. Payment options and scholarships are available.
Dues: $50 per season
VOICE t-shirt: One-time cost of approximately $20
Concert attire: We typically perform in black pants and black closed-toed shoes. Tops and accessories vary each season to reflect the concert theme. Members have discretion in selecting their attire and accessories and costs for these items vary according to member preferences.
When you join VOICE, you join for that season, and can decide on a season-by-season basis whether to stay an active member. Even if you don’t sing every season, once you’ve joined, you’re part of the family!
